Chair Professor of Optometry and
Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences
After postdoctoral studies, he joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1987. From 1991-8, he served as senior lecturer in the Department of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Auckland. He returned to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1998 as Professor and Head of the Department of Optometry and Radiography. From 2005-7, he was Head of the newly formed School of Optometry. He was appointed Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences in 2010. He assumed the Deanship in 2011.
Professor Yap is currently a member of the Hospital Authority Board and serves on several of its committees. He is a member of the Research Council of the Food and Health Bureau. He serves on accreditation panels for the Nursing Council (HKSAR) and the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand.
Professor Yap is an Honorary Professor at the Eye Institute of the University of Hong Kong and a Visiting Professor and a doctoral mentor at the West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University.
Professor Yap has had a long-standing research interest in myopia, in particular, the control of myopia progression. His other research interests include manipulation of the ageing processes of the eye and primary health care, in particular, diabetic retinopathy screening in the community.
