Dr. Qiu Shan Li, representing the Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction (IDMR) at Sichuan University, recently participated in a workshop focused on "Environment and Economics in the Hindu Kush-Himalaya (HKH) Region." This event was jointly organized by the South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), and the Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).
At the workshop, Dr. Li presented her research proposal on adaptive resilience in human settlements facing future disaster risks, drawing from extensive studies of post-disaster recovery following the "5.12" Wenchuan Earthquake. Her insights into the Linpan culture of the Western Sichuan Plain—highlighting its sustainable practices and harmonious human-nature relationship—captivated the audience and sparked engaging discussions.
Dr. Li also engaged with scholars from South Asia, discussing pressing issues in environmental protection, economic development, and sustainable agriculture. These exchanges were enriched by presentations on the latest research and future directions, offering valuable perspectives for addressing the region's environmental and developmental challenges.
In addition to individual presentations, the workshop featured thematic discussions on climate change adaptation, environmental economic policies, and integrated mountain development. These sessions fostered a multidisciplinary and cross-regional dialogue, reinforcing the importance of collaboration.
A notable outcome of the workshop was the preliminary agreement between IDMR and SANDEE to co-host an international academic conference on economic environment and sustainable development in South Asian countries in 2025. This event aims to enhance academic exchange and foster innovative solutions for regional sustainability.
Reflecting on the workshop, Dr. Li expressed her enthusiasm for the insights gained and the potential for ongoing international collaboration. She looks forward to contributing further to global sustainable development through continued research and partnerships.
